Regional Geography of Nigeria/West Africa

Nigeria's major geographic regions, its West African neighbours, and the role of ECOWAS.

Nigeria's geographic regions

Nigeria is often divided into broad regions based on relief and vegetation: the coastal/Niger Delta region in the south (mangrove swamps and creeks), the rainforest belt just north of it, the middle belt (guinea savanna, including the Jos Plateau), and the northern region (dominated by Sudan and Sahel savanna, drier and more open). These regional differences shape which crops are farmed, population density, and settlement patterns across the country.

Nigeria's West African neighbours

Nigeria shares land borders with Benin to the west, Niger to the north, Chad to the north-east, and Cameroon to the east, with the Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Guinea) to the south.

ECOWAS

ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) is a regional group of West African countries formed to promote economic integration, free movement of people and goods, and cooperation across the region. It allows citizens of member states to travel, trade, and work more freely across borders within West Africa than they could otherwise.
