The wave equation
Every wave obeys , linking speed, frequency, and wavelength. Increasing frequency while speed stays fixed (as in a single medium) means wavelength must shrink to compensate.
Example 1: A wave has a frequency of 50 Hz and a wavelength of 4 m. Find its speed.
.
Sound and echoes
Sound is a mechanical wave that needs a medium to travel through. An echo is a reflected sound wave; since the sound travels to the reflecting surface and back, the distance to that surface is , where is the total time from emission to hearing the echo.
Example 2: An echo is heard 0.5 s after a sound is emitted, and the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s. Find the distance to the reflecting surface.
.
Reflection and refraction of light
The law of reflection says the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Refraction is the bending of light as it crosses into a different medium, governed by Snell's law: , where is the angle of incidence and is the angle of refraction, both measured from the normal.
Example 3: Light passes from air into glass () at an angle of incidence of 30°. Find the angle of refraction.

Mirrors and lenses
The mirror/lens formula relates object distance , image distance , and focal length : . Magnification is .
Example 4: An object is placed 30 cm from a converging lens of focal length 10 cm. Find the image distance.
, so , giving .
Total internal reflection
This happens only when light travels from a denser medium towards a less dense one, at an angle beyond the critical angle , where .
Example 5: Find the critical angle for glass with refractive index 1.5.
