Mean, median, and mode
Mean . Median is the middle value once data is ordered (average the two middle values if there's an even count). Mode is the most frequent value.
Example 1: Find the mean, median, and mode of .
Mean . Ordered: -- median is the 4th value, 8. Mode is 8 (appears 3 times).
Grouped data
For grouped/frequency data, use the midpoint of each class interval as a representative value: mean , where is frequency and is the class midpoint.
Example 2: A class scored: 1-3 (freq 2), 4-6 (freq 5), 7-9 (freq 3). Find the mean.
Midpoints: 2, 5, 8. . . Mean .
Range and spread
Range highest value lowest value -- the simplest measure of spread.
Basic probability
. Probability is always between 0 (impossible) and 1 (certain).
Example 3: A bag has 5 red and 3 blue balls. Find the probability of picking a red ball.
.
Combined events
- Mutually exclusive (can't both happen): .
- Independent (one doesn't affect the other): .
Example 4: A die is rolled once. Find the probability of getting a 2 or a 5.
These are mutually exclusive: .
Example 5: A coin is tossed and a die is rolled. Find the probability of getting heads AND a 6.
These are independent: .
